CASTAGNICCIA - CASINCA

CASTAGNICCIA is a mountainous region located on the eastern side of Corsica et being able to culminate up to 1000 m of altitude.  Endowed with a fertile ground and rich in rivers, Castagniccia is a very green and very wooded region, which contrasts with the more poorer and more arid regions of Corsica.

It is the birthplace of famous characters including Pascal Paoli and it claims a particularly strong identity.

The region takes its name from the chestnut tree, "CASTAGNU" in Corsica, an omnipresent tree in the region. La Castagniccia, although difficult to access, had the highest rural population density in Corsica in the 11th century siècle. Its wealth and assets have attracted many families. Its economy was based on the cultivation of chestnuts which saved many Corsicans from starvation in a very poor island.

It borders several micro-regions, one of which is called CASINCA (maritime micro-region). Unlike the villages of Castagniccia, the villages of Casinca most often have a view of the plain and the sea since they extend to the feet of the latter.
